2014 - Update....Very sad to inform you that the PottyPark company was driven out of business by a lawsuit which claimed that they infringed on the patent of another company's product. I have that other company's product and I can tell you that the PottyPark was head and shoulders above and WAY better designed than that 'other' company's crappy product. I am very fortunate to have the PottyParks that I do and I can only hope that they will last me for many more years. I'm very sorry that if you don't already have one, you won't be able to get one unless you find someone who has one who doesn't need it any more. Good luck in finding a substitute. The concept continues to be sound and I am very happy that my dogs have an alternative to use during inclement weather or any other time that they cannot go outside. PottyPark...Jude, Christopher...you WILL be missed.
Potty Park - the best indoor dog potty!
I have four of these indoor potties for the Elfin dogs and I have to say that they have been simply the best alternative potty facilities I have tried in 18 years of breeding Silks. The dogs just love these indoor potties. With piddle pads, once a dog has peed on it, no one else wants to step on to use it. With the PottyPark, it's just like outside...one pees, everyone else wants to add their mark. They are easy to use and relatively easy to clean. To keep mine odor free, I have replaced the grass with mats made by 3M. I have used PottyParks since they first came out. The ONLY thing I did not like about PottyPark was the grass. Frankly it was a pain to keep it clean and difficult to keep it odorfree. Still, the PottyPark was head and shoulders above the other indoor potties on the market (and I have tried most of them!) To keep the grass clean I would hang it out on the fence, hose it thoroughly, let it hang for several days, then bring it in and roll it up in a pillow case and put it in the washer, extra wash, extra rinse, adding urine neutralizing products to the cycle. Wasting a LOT of energy and water.
I've been looking for a substitute for the grass for YEARS and I finally found it. I bought the 3M Nomad unbacked coil scraper mat from Mats, Inc and recommended it but, after hearing from people about the problems they were having trying to buy small pieces from Mats,Inc, I kept looking. Got new mats yesterday ordered through Amazon...cheaper, maybe even better.
Ok, it's grey instead of green but the dogs don't seem to care...they've pottied on it already. It's the same coil design only a little thinner, which actually makes it easier to handle/clean. I just wanted to be sure it was thick enough to give the dogs secure footing on the park ribbed surface, and it is. It's 3/8" instead of 5/8" so it's more flexible, lighter weight. The 3 x 5' mat cuts into 3 perfect sized mats with a little left over. It's $74 but the shipping was high (I bought two of them, think the shipping was around $25 but still, that's cheaper than the PottyPark grass at around $33 each for 3 mats. You'll divide the length into 3 equal parts, ie 20" then cut the width to 25 1/2" and you get 3 - 20 x 25.5" mats with a 10.5 strip left over. It cuts easily with a pair of scissors. Hope this helps.
Urine runs right through this mat...no pooling, no odor. Poop sits on top of it (I use it flat side UP) and is easily picked up. The other day one of the dogs had a bit of loose poop and it also hosed right off...best of all, NO retained odor. All I do to clean these mats is put them in the utility sink, spray them with some cleaner (I like lavender bathroom cleaner by Biokleen) then spray water through it. Hang it for a few minutes to let most of the water drip off and back it goes. I've been using these mats for 2 months now (wanted to be SURE they were great before sharing) and they are the easiest thing to clean and odor free (except for the vinyl smell they came with which has diminished considerably over time. No more smelly grass mats for me! I have shared this info with the PottyPark folks and suggested that they quit using grass and go straight to these mats...then the PottyParks would be truly unique and close to perfect!
When it rains or the grass is wet with dew, my prima donna dogs prefer indoor facilities and, with the PottyPark, the dogs no longer have accidents (why do we call inappropriate elimination 'accident' when the dogs obviously do it on purpose???) on the floor. They are not inexpensive (and the cost has come down considerably over the years) but are well worth the peace of mind. I am so glad not to be going through cases of piddle pads any more.
Note: I was using litter pans to start puppies but, after watching my last litter literally housebreak themselves...it's amazing to watch the little pups just do it on their own...I start my litters directly on the Potty Park from the beginning! At 4 weeks, they are using the grass 100%...not a single accident! Just watch...
Three days after the Silk puppies turned 5 weeks, I put the Potty Park under the grass mat and they took to it immediately. They have been using it consistently ever since!
